Where has the music gone?
Olive Dean trained at the ECA School of Drawing and Painting. She uses various cameraless alternative photographic techniques and also makes pinhole images. She finds the old adage “not an exact science” is an apt one. In applying sensitiser to old photographic paper - such as for lumen preparation - the interplay of randomisation, accident and “controlled chance” to quote Jackson Pollock, is for her exciting. Failure is not infrequent! Different papers produce different results.
These pinhole photographs of the Saughton Bandstand, originally erected in 1908 and restored in 2018, lead the ever present shadow of the viewer towards the empty stucture, nostalgic and a little eerie. Where has the music gone? Perhaps it will come back ...
