Photograms

A photogram is a photographic image made without a camera by placing objects directly onto the surface of a light-sensitive material such as photographic paper and then exposing it to light.

Three different methods are used.

  • Traditional photograms – made using an enlarger in the dark room on black and white photographic paper.
  • Cyanotypes – paper is coated with light sensitive iron salt solution and exposed outdoors to UV rays from the sun.
  • Lumen Print – where black and white photographic paper is exposed outdoors to UV rays from the sun.

Throughout the project period discarded objects, beach flotsam, general detritus and fallen flora will be collected from Dunbar and its surrounding location. Exposures using these found objects will be made in-situ and in the darkroom environment to produce prints.
